cebu taxi experience

the airport-capitol route is nothing new to me. it's a route i frequent the past few months and i know for sure that taking the ayala access road from reclamation is the shortest and cheapest route. earlier today, the taxi i was in didn't take that option. what's worst, when we got to sm instead of heading straight for ayala, the driver took a turn to take mango avenue. mango avenue - one of the busiest roads around that time.

a few months back, a taxi driver asked for an additional php 30 on the fare after several minutes on the road. of course i disagreed and was about ready to jump out when he explained that's because he couldn't get any passengers from the airport back to the city.  i pitied the old man so i okay-ed.

i'm sensing that the cebu taxi experience is not as easy and safe as it was. are the cebu taxi drivers slowly becoming like their counterparts in manila? or maybe you have good experiences too?

you should also put yourself to place...if the driver went beyond his border, then you fight for your right... :D

yikes, is this like saying yes to my question?

Actually, taxi drivers who do that are foolish to ask for more. One, the longer they take to drop their passenger off, the more gas the car consumes, therefore causing them more damage than more money. Secondly, it's a crime to ask for more than the reflected amount on the meter and they're mandated by law to provide receipts now. If they ask for more than the amount on the meter, might as well jump ship or inform the driver that you know where to report abusive drivers.

Stand on your ground or, perhaps, listen to a voice of a taxi driver here: http://taxidiary.blogspot.com/

@wilhelmina: yeah! kinda dumb right? good thing cebu is now mandating for taxis to give out receipts.

@pinoyapache: thanks for the link. I checked it and some taxi driver we have there...Phd degree holder!

My taxi ride experiences aren't entirely bad except for those instances that they do not have change or when they insist on taking a certain route other than what i want them to take.

Some are pretty much conversational and polite.

@rigor: we have taxi drivers that don't give change here in cebu? tsk tsk tsk.

i don't think the taxi drivers in cebu are that bad. if i take a cab from subangdaku, mandaue to the airport, i set my budget at P130. the meter runs from P110 to 125. no one has ever asked me for extra yet, so i give them P130.

but there are drivers who rig their meters. i encountered a few. one thing is common, CTC. and i don't know why their cabs' meters ran faster than the others. take one of my usual routes for example, on normal taxis, it's P55, if holiday, it's P57.50, if CTC P62.50. I can still take those. But there were two or three instances when the meter shoots up to P75.

but the yellow taxis are worse. P70 on a flag down? i don't think they will last long in cebu.

@ceblogger: i'm sure there are more good than bad ones. that's why i was expecting those instead of crappy stories like i had.

as for the yellow taxis, at least i already know flag down is high so i know i won't be using them. compared to the ordinary ones that'll catch you by surprise!

When I am assigned on graveyard shift, I normally take taxi from South Terminal bound for MEPZ... Knowing different taxi modus operandis here in Cebu, I have to prepare Php130 for my fare so I would not find any trouble when it comes to the "change"... What I normally practiced (my suggestion also), take a taxi operated by big and reliable operators... Ken Taxi, Tiger, Spider and Scorpion, etc... I also hate drivers asking for "add-ons" due to traffic issues, but sometimes I really feel pity for them...lol

@technologian: yeah that's a good suggestion. i used to do that too. i have spider taxi's number. i used to be a holiday taxi fan but somebody told me it's also unreliable. :(
